The Fairmount Township Fire Department proudly serves the rapidly growing communities of the City of Basehor and Fairmount Township. Located within Leavenworth County, Kansas, our service area spans 39.2 square miles. We provide essential services, including fire suppression, EMS, rescue, prevention, inspection, and public education, to approximately 12,224 citizens.
We are seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to assume the role of Fire Captain. This leadership position is critical to the department, as it will manage the daily operations of two fire stations within Fairmount Township.
Responsibilities include:
Direct response to fire and medical emergencies.
Conducting mandatory business inspections.
Developing and leading department training.
Performing necessary administrative functions.
Fulfilling other assignments as directed by the Fire Chief.
To ensure eligibility for the Shift Fire Captain position, prospective candidates must fulfill the following mandatory criteria. The submission of all official licenses and certifications is required as part of the application packet.
Basic Eligibility: Applicants must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age, possess a valid Class B Non-Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators License, and hold a High School Diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) equivalent.
Professional Experience: Candidates must document a minimum of five (5) years of verifiable experience as a firefighter or fire officer within the Fairmount Township Fire Department or a fire department of comparable size or larger, which may include both volunteer and paid service periods.
The following professional certifications are essential for consideration:
Firefighter I and II.
Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification (State of Kansas or National Registry).
NIMS Compliance: ICS 100, 200, 700, and ICS 300.
Fire Officer I.
Instructor 1.
Equivalency and Board Discretion: An Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, when substantiated by five years of experience, may be deemed equivalent to certain IFSAC certification requirements. The governing Board reserves the right to waive or modify any qualification at its discretion.
Candidates possessing the following supplementary credentials will be highly regarded in the selection process:
Fire Officer II Certification.
Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science or Administration.

The applicant selection procedure adheres to the following rigorous sequence:
Initial Submission: The applicant must submit all requisite paperwork, the resume, and certification documentation to the Fire Chief.
Administrative Review: The Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief will review all submitted materials to verify that the applicant satisfies all mandatory requirements.
Evaluations: Qualified applicants will proceed to a formal written test based on IFSTA Officer 1, followed by structured, hands-on scenario evaluations.
Final Interview: Successful candidates from the evaluations phase will be scheduled for a final, formal interview.
Wages and Benefits
This is a non-exempt position with a starting rate of approximately $81,968.64 per year. This position is within a step based compensation plan. The current top step is approximately $109,845.82 per year. This position will work a 24-hour Berkeley shift schedule: 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), 24 hours off, 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), 24 hours off, 24 hours on (8 a.m. to 8 a.m.), four days off. Then the schedule repeats.
This position is covered by the Kansas Police and Fire retirement plan.
Health, Dental, and Vision insurance are available. Individual health insurance is covered 100%. Family health plans are covered at 80%, with a 20% cost to the employee. Dental and Vision insurance are at the cost of the employee.
A 457 individual retirement plan is available. This position also includes paid vacation and sick leave.
